The Napkin Notes Dad: An Example Of A Special Father Daughter Bond

A touching idea.

Cathy Donohue

44-year-old Garth Callaghan has a very special way of communicating with his daughter Emma.

He has been writing special ‘napkin notes’ to Emma every day since she started school and recently began sharing them to the public via his website and Facebook page.

Emma is now 14 and the teenager has started to write notes back to her dad, sometimes they share inspirational quotes from famous people and other days, poignant messages straight from the heart.

The notes took on an even greater meaning when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer in autumn 2011.

“My first diagnosis was grim,” Mr. Callaghan said but the tumor was successfully removed in December 2011.

However, Mr. Callaghan has had an ongoing battle with cancer in recent years and has pledged to write Emma enough notes to last her until graduation.

Garth from Richmond, Virginia happened to notice his daughter ripping a napkin one day and asked her what she was doing with them.

Emma had been saving her dad’s notes in a notebook and from then on Garth decided to photograph each image.

The doting dad told the Watertown Daily Times that it’s another way for parents and children to communicate as life is so fast-paced these days.

“It creates that connection,” he said. “It’s really powerful.”
