Lonely Planet have named the world’s top 10 regions

Megan Roantree

A tourist spot in Ireland makes the list!

Over the years Lonely Planet has become one of the most reputable and trusted travel guides in the world, so when we saw that an area in Ireland had made it onto the list of the best regions, we were honoured, although not too surprised.

Choquequirao in Peru took the top spot.

According to the Lonely Planet, this region is hidden across the deep Apurimac Valley and was the last Inca refuge from the conquistadors. It is set to gain a cable car in 2017 which is expected to attract more visitors.

New Zealand, Portugal and Chile also made the list, but the tenth spot went to the wonderful Kerry destination of the Skellig Ring.

Here is why Lonely Planet put it on their list:

”A long time ago, far, far away… a small band of monks established a hidden base on a remote, wave-pounded hunk of rock rising out of the Atlantic like a giant triangle. With a setting like this, it’s no wonder Skellig Michael made the new Star Wars location list.

To get to this far-flung isle, a boat trip is necessary from the Skellig Ring, perhaps Ireland’s most charismatically wild and emerald stretch of coastline. Glimpsed at the end of The Force Awakens, Skellig Michael will play a bigger role in this year’s sequel and local businesses are gearing up for the expected visitor bump.”
