The Irish are known for our love of a good pint but it is clear that we’re conscious of the calories because we are drinking more light beer that ever before.
According to The Irish Sun, people are choosing to drink lighter beers to stay under the drink-drive limits and have a healthier lifestyle.
Brewers say that Irish people are opting for beers and stouts with a low alcohol content instead of their usual tipples, indulging in options such as Guinness Mid-Strength and Carling Zest, which measure in at 2.8 per cent.

Watchdogs see the shift in sales as a positive sign and Thomas Burke of the Irish Brewers’ Association believes that the rise in the sale of low alcohol beers is due to a change in peoples’ priorities.
“The lives of drinkers change as they assume the responsibility in terms of work and other commitments.
“Mid-strength products give them the choice of reducing their intake of alcohol while still enjoying the full taste and experience of their chosen beer,” he said.
Brewers are hopping on the mid-strength bandwagon and are urgently brainstorming new products that could tackle the market.

Fionnuala Sheehan, a spokesperson for The Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society said that the move shows that people are becoming more conscious of the effect alcohol has on the body.
“Mid-strength beer has a lesser impact on the body and makes pacing yourself and drinking at a reasonable rate much easier,” she said.
