Results from the National Survey of Family Growth were examined with a specific focus on 10, 463 straight, sexually active women between the ages of 15 and 44.
The research, published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that more than one third of heterosexual women have tried anal sex at least once.
However, of the 36.3 per cent who said they had tried it, only 13.2 per cent had tried in the last twelve months.
Looking at the data, researchers found that there were some common factors linking the women who admitted to experimenting with anal.
Women most likely to have tried were in their twenties, were not religious and had higher levels of income and education.
The study also found that women who are married or living with their partner were more likely to have had anal sex than single ladies.
The winning combination with the highest amount of yes answers were non-religious women in relationships.
