Beloved broadcaster and proud Limerick man Terry Wogan has put his stamp of approval on the latest City of Culture endeavour, by penning an entry for the “Limerick’s Limericks” competition.
BBC presenter Wogan, who hails from the Treaty city, has written a verse to promote the Limerick Virtual Walking Trail.
“Friendship is Limerick’s style
We invite you to stay a while,
Share our town, our history
Treaty Stone and our courtesy
I promise, you’ll leave with a smile!”
The competition was launched as part of Limerick City of Culture 2014 in early August, and poems are going to be part of a virtual walking trail throughout Limerick City.
This tour was devised by a small group of innovators from a Limerick company called BundlBee and is the very first Virtual QR Code Walking Heritage Tour in Ireland and possibly the world.
The concept of the Walking Tour is simple – there are 12 points of historical interest earmarked, both well known and less known landmarks, each to have a plaque featuring a QR Code alongside a Limerick poem about the location.
Once the QR Code is scanned the participant will be brought to a mobile optimised web page that will again feature the Limerick poem and historical information gathered by local historian Ursula Callaghan, including photographs detailing the location.
The organisers are running a competition to encouraging budding writers to get on board and be in with a chance to have their names on plaques, like Terry Wogan, around the city on this Limerick’s Limericks trail.
If you like the idea of seeing your name on a plaque by the Shannon, you’ll have to follow these rules:
- A limerick must hold 5 lines
- Line 1, 2 and 5 must rhyme
- Three and four alone
- Should rhyme on their own
- Followed by a funny punch line
To submit your entries please go to www.limerickslimericks.com. Entries will be posted on their facebook page with an opportunity for votes to be cast. See facebook.com/limerickslimericks or on twitter @LimericksWalk.
