Tantalize Your Tastebuds: How-To Make that Perfect Christmas Stuffing

We feel hungry already!

Una Kavanagh

We’re stuffing mad here at Her.ie and Christmas is the perfect time to try out new flavours and different ingredients. This time around we’re sharing with you a lovely recipe for chestnut stuffing!

Why not give it a go this festive season?

Ingredients:

  • 450g chestnuts, shelled and peeled and chopped
  • 6 cups torn white bread pieces
  • 2 white onions, chopped finely
  • 4 sticks of celery, chopped finely
  • 1 tblsp dried sage
  • 2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven  230°C.
  2. Similar to brussel sprouts, with a sharp knife, cut an “X” into the round side of each chestnut.
  3. In a flat baking pan, spread the chestnuts in a layer and add a 1/4 of water. Bake for 10 minutes until the chestnut shells open.
  4. Remove the nuts and peel away the shell while they’re still warm.
  5. Lower the temperature to 160°C.
  6. Place your torn white bread pieces in a layer and bake them for about 12-15 minutes or until they’re golden brown. Transfer them to a bowl.
  7. In a large pan, add a dash of olive oil and cook your celery, onions, all of your dried herbs and butter in a low heat until all the veg have softened.
  8. Add the chestnuts to the mix and keep stirring for a further minute. Turn off the heat.
  9. In the bread bowl, add your veg mix to the bread pieces and mix well as you add in the parsley.
  10. Season to taste and let the stuffing cool.
