Road safety experts have warned motorists to take extra care on the roads this weekend as Ireland prepares for this winter’s first big freeze.

Temperatures fell to minus three degrees in some parts of the country last night which Met Eirrean forecasters have revealed is unusually low for this time of year.

The Road Safety Authority and the gardai have urged motorists who may be travelling this Bank Holiday Weekend to take extra precautions on the icy roads.

According to The Irish Sun, a spokesperson for the RSA said: “With the clocks going back this weekend we would appeal to all road users to be aware of the added challenges of using the road in conditions of reduced daylight.

“We would advise drivers to take care as Met Eireann are forecasting below zero temperatures.”

Parents can expect to wrap the children up warmly this midterm as freezing conditions are expected to continue into next week.

Gardai will be clamping down on learner drivers this Bank Holiday Weekend

The gardai will also be on the look out for unaccompanied learner drivers this weekend and Chief Superintendent Aiden Reid from the Garda Traffic Bureau said: “There are still 36 per cent of those driving as novice drivers who are failing to comply with regulations. They will be the focus over this weekend,” he said.

Take care on the road this weekend, ladies! The important thing is to get to your destination safe and sound.
