Ladies, let’s be honest – we all know that when it comes to sharing a bed with your other half, it is not nearly as romantic as Hollywood portrays it to be.

Ah, the movies. In films when men and women go to bed together a few things happen. First and foremost, they usually have the-best-sex-ever. Secondly, they fall asleep wrapped up together in a mess of limbs and sheets. Thirdly, they both manage to stay in this cuddly position all night long without moving so much as an inch.

If you’ve ever shared a bed with a man, you know that there are a few things that the Hollywood version glosses over. Namely atrocious man-farts, bad breath and hogging the duvet.

Sharing a bed with a man isn’t glamorous but you have to admit, it is comforting and lovely. Yes, there’s nothing better than getting under the covers and having a good, old cuddle with himself. It’s an instant stress-reliever, it boosts your mood and most importantly, it encourages a deeper connection with himself (so long as you can turn a blind eye to those man-farts).

When we hop under the covers with our other halves, most of us have a go-to ‘couple’ sleeping position. Did you know that how you choose to drift off with your other half tells an awful lot about the kind of relationship you have?

In fact, a new study of 2,000 couples found that rather than getting up close and personal with our partners when we’re trying to get some shut eye, 46 per cent of us turn away and sleep with our backs to them.

Here are the most common couple sleeping positions and what they say about your relationship…

Did you know that sleeping back to back indicates a healthy relationship?

Liberty: If you sleep back to back with your partner, without touching it means that as a couple you’re completely connected to each other but independent enough to sleep alone. In fact, according to psychologists, this is one of the healthiest sleeping positions for couples to have.

Cherish: The cherish position is similar to the above – you both sleep back to back, only you make sure that your bodies are touching. These couples are comfortable, intimate and relaxed with each other. This position is one of the most common ones for new relationships.

Spooning: When a man cuddles up behind you and spoons you, this means that he is taking the lead and protecting you. This position reveals a strong attraction between couples and a feeling of security.

Pillow Talk: If you sleep face to face with your man, you’re a couple that enjoys one-on-one contact and you love having a bit of a chat with each other before you drift off to sleep.

Lovers’ Knot:  In this position you lay face to face with your man, entwined for a short period and then after a while you separate to sleep. This position signifies intimacy, love and independence.

The Lovers: Like the above, only in this position couples stay entwined facing each other all night long. This position is usually seen in new couples who can’t bear to be separated from each other.

The Romantic: Like the Hollywood representation, this position is when a woman sleeps with her head and arm on the man’s chest. It’s most common in rekindled relationships.

Superwoman: Are you guilty of being a bit of a bed hog? This position involves the woman sleeping in a sprawled out position and the man sleeps on the edge of a bed. This position signifies that the man loves his woman and doesn’t mind taking a secondary position and allowing her to have her space.

So ladies, when it comes to getting your sleep on with himself what kind of couple are you? Here in the Her.ie office we’re a bunch of Superwomen, Liberty girls and Cherishers…
