In life, there are many awkward moments: falling down in public, accidentally spilling coffee down your front and having an embarrassing slip of the tongue are all common ones. However, the worst of them all has to be accidentally sending a ‘sext’ (that’s sexy text) to the wrong person.

According to a new study carried out by MobileInsurance.co.uk, one in seven of us have accidentally sent a racy text message or photograph to the wrong person. Morto!

You want to know what’s even worse? A tenth of us have sent the above text to a member of our family by mistake. Shuder.

The survey revealed that a quarter of people who made the mistake admitted that they had sent dirty texts to an ex by mistake.

“Wait… who did I send that to again?”

While 44 per cent of people usually acknowledge what they’ve done and apologise for the mistake, 39 per cent pretend that it simply hasn’t happened and a further 11 per cent change their tactics and pretend that the message was actually meant for the person they mistakenly sent it to

“We often have customers write in concerned that the contents of their mobile phone will be revealed when sending their handset off to be fixed, but people needn’t worry about that due to confidentiality,” said a spokesperson for MobileInsurance.co.uk.

“This made us wonder how many people tended to send risque text messages and images they wouldn’t want to end up in the wrong hands. The number of people who had sent a rude text message accidentally to the wrong person was a real shock and, as for those who sent the message to a family member, I cannot imagine how that conversation went afterwards. How embarrassing!” the spokesman added.

So who are we most likely to send a dirty text to by mistake? The survey came up with the follow results:

1. A friend – 37 per cent likely.

2. An ex-partner – 25 per cent likely.

3. A colleague – 17 per cent likely.

4. A family member – 9 per cent likely.

5. A stranger – 7 per cent likely.

6. Other – 5 per cent likely.
