What are you like first thing in the morning? Are you bursting with energy for the day ahead or do you, like most of us, have to literally drag yourself out of bed? A new survey has found that when it comes to sleep, Ireland just isn’t getting enough.

According to the figures, 46 per cent of us feel we don’t get enough sleep on a typical night. What are the main things keeping us awake?

Well it’s all down to stress and anxiety. Did you know that 55 per cent of us wake up at least once during the night, and surprisingly, more women than men cite stress and anxiety as a sleep issue?

It turns out that us women folk find it hard to switch off after a hard day at the office, and we tend to dwell on problems if something upsetting or difficult has happened to us at work.

The survey, which was conducted by  Empathy Research for Harvey Norman, questioned over 1,400 people on their sleeping patterns and behaviours in order to determine just how well we sleep.

Most of us struggle when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.

The results showed that anywhere from 11pm to 12 midnight is the preferred bedtime for most of us, however, even if we get our eight hours, 36 per cent of those surveyed said that they struggle to get going in the mornings.

And if stress or anxiety isn’t keeping you awake, then your sleepless nights could all be down to the person you share your bed with. 20 per cent of people questioned blamed their partner for keeping them awake at night, citing snoring, irregular breathing and the age-old problem of tossing and turning as the biggest issues.

Are you one of the few lucky people who can sleep through an entire night or do you find it difficult to nod off?
