From paddle-boarding and kayaking, to relaxing on a cruise with a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio, there is something for everyone on a lake holiday. Exploring the stunning waterways of the world is one of the best ways to take a break and get away from the madness.

So get out your wetsuit and take a look at six of world’s most incredible lake destinations. How many will you add to your travel wishlist?

1. Lake Como

A stretch of water so beautiful, the one and only George Clooney chose it as a base for his second home. Surrounded by the spectacular Rhaetian Alps, Lake Como’s shoreline is scattered with beautiful little villages, including Laglio and (the original) Bellagio. Explore the exquisite winding roads, visit the famous Villa del Balbieanello to soak up incredible views, and take a boat tour around the lake. Bellissimo.

2. Lake Baikal, Russia

Cape Burhan and Shaman Rock on Olkhon Island at Baikal Lake, Russia.

Located in Siberia in east Russia, you’ll need to take a six hour flight from Moscow to reach this beautiful lake – but trust us, it’s worth the trek. Formed approximately 30 million years ago, Lake Baikal is one of the world’s oldest geographical features. And with a shoreline of 2000km, it’s also one of the largest lakes on the planet – perfect for an action-packed adventure. Visit during deepest darkest winter to admire it in its frozen solid state and take a dog sled across its vast surface. Summer visitors will enjoy incredible views across the sparkling blue waters to the magnificent mountain ranges on the opposite shore.

3. Lakelands Adventure Region, Ireland

Ireland’s Lakelands & Inland Waterways offers a unique, action-packed holiday experience. The region stretches through four zones of water: Lough Erne, the Upper Lakelands with Lough Allen & Lough Key, Lough Ree and Lough Derg. You can visit towns along the way when stopping off including Killaloe/Ballina, Portumna, Carrick on Shannon and Enniskillen. Cruise your own boat, take in stunning scenery and try your hand at paddle-boarding, kayaking and a whole lot. Hop-on and off whenever your fancy, or stick to dry land and soak up the scenery and activities with your feet firmly on terra firma.

4. The Lake District, United Kingdom

Haweswater is a reservoir built in the valley of Mardale and flooded in 1935

An area in the north-west of England so beautiful, you’ll want to return again and again. A popular holiday destination, it’s famous all over the world for its incredible lakes, forests and mountains. Poets including William Wordworth and Robert Southey were inspired by the beauty of the region. Home to endless outdoor activities, from lake cruises and watersports, to mountain walks and literary landmarks, our advice is to rent a bike and hit the road!

5. Lake Superior

The largest of the Great Lakes of North America, its shoreline is shared by Canada and the US. Stay in a gorgeous lakeside cabin, spend a day fishing or try your hand at some water sports. And if you’re heading to the US and looking a classic American road trip, check out the Great Lakes Circle Tour – a scenic 1,000 mile road system that connects each of the Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Eri and Ontario).

6. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

A must-visit place on any trip to Croatia. Sitting pretty at the heart of Croatia’s national park (one of the most beautiful places in Europe), these 16 interlinked lakes are surrounded by dense green forest. At Plitvice National Park you’ll see endless sparkling waterfalls and cascades, rstic wooden footbridges and miles and miles of pathways. It’ll take you up to six hours to explore every inch of the lake, so come prepared to walk. Or if you want to get out on the lake, take a tour boat, or hire you very own rowboat.
