For our money, there is nothing as fun as a weekend away with the girls.
A bunch of your best mates, a road trip and complete freedom from work and home obligations is a great recipe for a good time. However, it’s Murphy’s Law that something will go awry so powered by Lucozade Energy, here’s our seven commandments to make sure your weekend goes off without a hitch.
1) Designate the ‘voice of reason’
Co-ordinating a trip for a bunch of ladies is a mammoth task. Whether it’s deciding on a date or sorting a hotel, leaving one person in charge of the details is the only way to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Just be careful who you choose, or you could end up like one Her.ie staffer who arrived at Shannon Airport with a group in tow only to find out that the flight was booked for the next day!
2) Be budget savvy
There’s nothing worse than heading on a trip knowing that you’ll be eating beans for a month after you get back so make sure to organise a holiday that suits everyone’s budget. Hotels love group bookings so rather than booking online, try calling the venue and negotiating a package instead. Many will give you a better rate on accommodation or throw in a few extras, such as spa treatments or meals.
3) Enjoy the journey
Exhaustion is the enemy of fun so plan for an early start to give your gang time for a few fun detours if the mood takes you. If you’re driving, make sure to compile a playlist of all your guilty pleasures so you can have a laugh and begin the craic before you even get to your destination.
4) Try something new
While it might be tempting to go for the usual options, trying out a new activity can be a great bonding activity for you and your mates, as well as being good fun. From discovering your inner farmer in Meath to channelling Eddie Irvine on the racetrack, you’ll definitely work up a thirst!
5) Pace yourself
Speaking of, nobody wants to be the girl who ruins the night by drinking too much, bursting into tears over her ex-boyfriend and having to be put to bed by midnight so as the slogan says, enjoy in moderation! Also, don’t be the one who falls head over heels for the local GAA hero and disappears for the night – hoes over bros, always.
6) Dance like no-one is watching
You’re away from home! The chances of bumping into your boss, neighbour or mother are slim to none so enjoy it while you can. You know those moves that you’ve been shaking in front of your mirror? Now is the time to let them shine. Party on, sister!
7) The Recovery
Chances are, you’re not going to be feeling in tip-top shape the night after a big blow-out with the girls but you can minimise the damage by getting a few pints of water in before you hit the hay. Some people swear by the morning after fry-up, where we personally feel a freezing cold drink has been known to work wonders. A girls’ weekend away is also no time to be watching the calories so feel free to indulge in all snacks and treats while rolled up in a duvet. You’ve earned it.
