She was a ballerina?

Sue Murphy

There are so many things that we encounter on an almost daily basis that we never stop to think about some of the more interesting facts about them. From our favourite movies to food and makeup, we will attempt to bring you some random information that you will most definitely be able to use as a future party trick.

It would have been her 53rd birthday if she was still alive today, so this week we are focusing on the wonderful Princess Diana.

1. Despite the fact that she became a Lady at 14, Diana worked for a living.

Even while she lived in virtual luxury, Diana never chose the easy road and instead opted to work for a living.  She worked as a nanny while also serving as a teacher’s assistant at Young England Nursery School in Knightsbridge. She also worked as a dance instructor.

2. Prince Charles dated Diana’s sister first!

Hard to believe but Charles was originally attached to Diana’s sister, Sarah. Although Sarah and Charles separated, it seems that she wasn’t very happy that Diana moved on to marry him.

3. She is one of the descendants of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.

Georgiana was Lady Di’s great-great-great-great aunt and there quite a few similarities, not least for the fact that both were worshipped for their fashion sense over the years. In fact, Georgiana was known for creating fashion trends in late 18th century England.

4. She appeared on a LOT of magazine covers.

Her pictures have appeared on the cover page of the People magazine for more than 50 times, Time magazine 8 times, on Newsweek for 7 times among others. Diana barely spent a day out of the papers while she was alive.

5. Her parents divorced when she was 8.

Diana’s father, Lord Althorp left when her mother, Frances, had an affair. Diana lived with her mother in London initially but her father later won custody of her. He married again but Diana was never fond of her new step-mother, Lady Dartmouth.

6. She wanted to be a ballerina.

Although Diana was moved around academically, Diana did love music and dancing. She longed to study ballet and become a professional ballerina for the Royal Ballet.

7. She never said she would “obey” Charles in her wedding vows.

Not only did Diana accidentally call her husband-to-be “Philip Charles” at the altar, she also omitted the part where she would “obey” him in marriage. That traditional vow was left out by the couple’s request.
