Back when our summers stretched out ahead of us for three gloriously long months, we made the most of every single day of freedom. Trips to the beach, hours and hours spent running around the fields with cousins, and living on a diet of 99s and sandy hang sangwiches. And every year we complained, kicked, cried and screamed about having to go back to the classroom in September, but let’s face it… secretly we all loved it.
Here are seven reasons we all loved going back to school.
1. The new supplies
Snazzy new pencil case? Check. Shiny lunchbox? In the front pocket of your school bag. Sparkling new pens? Always. You loved every minute spent picking out all of the new stuff. And then showing it off to anyone who would listen.
2. Back with the pals
The big reunion after a long separation from your BFFs was always epic. A whole three months worth of new stories (both real and imaginary) to share and boast about. It doesn’t get much better than that.
3. The new classroom
Establishing yourself in a new room was a big deal in primary school. You knew you were going to be spending at least a year or two in there, so exploring every inch of it was important. New posters on the walls, new blackboard, new clock, new nature table. New everything.
4. The smell of new books
Whether you loved or loathed your school books, opening up that first page and breathing in the new book smell was always a treat.
5. The ‘What I Did During My Summer Holiday’ essay
During the first week of every September, you and your classmates were given the epic task of writing one of these bad boys. And every year without fail, you couldn’t for the life of you remember what you’d done at the start – or middle- of the summer.
6. The build-up to Hallowe’en
That’s right, the Hallowe’en talk – and classroom artwork – started in September. And we loved every minute of it.
7. Reunited with your crush
Every single one of us fancied some on the bus or in the playground. No exceptions.
