Sealed With a Kiss: Hurricane Sandy Unearths A Series of Love Letters

The letters randomly showed up in Kathleen Chaney's garden and now she's on a mission to reunite the messages with the woman who wrote them decades ago...

For all the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, here is a story that will warm your heart. Last week, 57 vintage love letters were discovered in the debris. And surprisingly, they’ve remained intact and are still legible.

The Huffington Post reports that a 14-year-old boy found the soggy letters as he search through the debris with his mother. Curious about what the letters contained, they took them home and dried them out. What they discovered was a series of communication between two young lovers during World War II.

“They’re beautiful,” said Kathleen Chaney, the woman who is currently in possession of the letters.

A little bit of research revealed that the tender messages were sent by Dorothy Fallen to her boyfriend, Lynn Farham, during World War II between 1942 and 1948. The couple were planning on getting married as soon as Lynn returned home.

No one knows how the love letters managed to withstand the wrath of Hurricane Sandy

Understandably, Kathleen felt as though she should try and return the letters to the couples’ family. She turned to popular American website Craigslist and posted an advert searching for the writer. However, after a little research, Kathleen discovered that Lynn had sadly passed away back in 1991.

But the story takes another turn here…

Amazingly enough, Dorothy’s niece stumbled across the advert online and contacted Kathleen to tell her that Dorothy is now 91 and in poor health. Kathleen has promised to deliver the letters to Dorothy as soon as possible.

We imagine there’ll be a lot of fond reminiscing when the letters are finally reunited with the woman who wrote them all those years ago.
