RTÉ have been forced to deny claims that they are planning to spend a whopping €70,000 on a ‘life size statue’ to honour late presenter Gerry Ryan, who passed away in 2010.
Responding to an article printed in a tabloid newspaper over the weekend, representatives from Gerry’s former on-air home 2FM took to Twitter to say the story was “inaccurate and incorrect”, adding that “2fm are planning a memorial to Gerry Ryan but it is not a life size statue and it does not cost €70k or anything close to it”.
Gerry Ryan worked for 2FM since the station’s inception in 1979
Ryan was the station’s most popular presenter at the time of his passing four years ago, attracting almost 300,000 listeners on a daily basis. His eldest daughter Lottie has embarked on a radio career with the national broadcaster also, presenting The Early, Early Breakfast Show from 6am to 8am on weekend mornings.
