Rise of the Groomzilla: Men Now Twice As Likely As Women To Want a Big, White Wedding

According to some new research men are now the main culprits when it comes to over-the-top weddings. Yes, we found it hard to believe too...

Now, we’ll admit we scoffed slightly when we heard this but then again, it could be true (we have just yet to meet a man that fits this profile). According to some new research, men are now twice as likely as women to want a big, ‘fairytale’ wedding.

Yes, apparently it is now men who want to break the bank for a massive white wedding and it is women who want a cheaper ceremony without any over-the-top fuss (see why we’re having a hard time believing this?).

According to the research, which was commissioned by Barclays, only nine per cent of women would be willing to spend their life’s savings on a fairytale wedding. However sixteen per cent of men would have no problem dropping the cash on their big day.

The results suggest that us womenfolk have become far more practical when it comes to budgeting for the future, and the vast majority of us would prefer to have money left over for a mortgage rather than spending it all on champagne-fuelled celebrations.

More and more men are willing to flash the cash when it comes to their big day

As part of the research, 2,100 adults were questioned. Of this number, nine per cent said they are already planning on downsizing the scale of their wedding or even delay them because of the cost.

A further 13 per cent admitted that they were thinking about asking guests to make a financial contribution to them before the wedding instead of giving them a present. This practice of “pre-gifting” is becoming more and more common as cash-strapped couples plan to tie the knot.

“…it’s not surprising that couples are having to think twice about the dilemma of tying the knot and buying a property,” said a spokesperson for Barclays.

“But with a little lateral thinking and some sensible saving and budgeting they are finding increasingly savvy ways to have their wedding cake and eat it,” the spokesperson added.

What do you think ladies? Are men really starting to get more hung up on the idea of a ‘fairytale wedding’ than us women?
