Irish beer lovers will be enjoying a beer in the local pub with old friends on Christmas Eve, a new survey reveals. 46% of people surveyed say that their Christmas Eve drinks with friends is their favourite moment of the festive season and when asked which Irish celebrity they would most like to share a beer with this Christmas, the majority (22%) chose football legend Roy Keane for that ultimate celebrity chat.*

Ireland’s love affair with music also came through in the results, with 21% of people surveyed wanting to share a beer with Irish rock icon Phil Lynott this Christmas.

Of those surveyed, 86% rated themselves as very knowledgeable when it comes to all things beer, and for the most part they backed this up, as 77% correctly stated the winning combination of barley, hops, water and yeast is what creates beer’s unique tastes.

63% of Irish beer fans concede that the social setting is the most important thing when deciding what they wish to wet their whistles with.  A beer on a Friday after a tough week came out as one of the top choices for the nation’s favourite beer occasions (32%).

Irish consumers let their tastebuds do the talking when it comes to choosing their top tipple, with 54% favouring ‘taste’ as the most important factor when deciding what beer suits a particular occasion.  Not surprisingly, the self-proclaimed Irish beer aficionados had quite a tasty opinion when it came to identifying key flavours in certain beer types. The unconventional banana flavours in a Weissbier tickled the tongues of the majority (28%), while most of the survey’s subjects identified coffee (53%) as the main flavour running through the dark Irish stouts.
