It was the subject of widespread derision when plans were first announced, but it seems a gamble on The Gathering has more than paid off for the government. A review of the tourism promotion has found that it cost €13m to stage, but generated a staggering €170m. The report further found that The Gathering had attracted an additional 275,000 visitors to Irish shores. However, Minster for Tourism Leo Varadkar said the project has been a “fantastic experience and success” that had helped re-establish Ireland’s reputation globally as a premier holiday destination. Many of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions have reported record visitor numbers in 2013, including Dublin Zoo, The Cliffs of Moher and Blarney Castle. Despite the huge success of the project, the review has advised the Government that a repeat is not advisable within the next five years, ando consideration should instead be given to focusing on sustained, ongoing development.
