If you’re one of those people who hits the local supermarket to stock up in advance of Good Friday, we have some good news for you.
Good Friday is one of only two days of the year when pubs and off-licenses are banned from selling alcohol but following a series of meetings today, the Licensed Vintners Association and the Vintners Federation of Ireland said they are feeling confident that changes could be afoot.
It’s understood that the organisations met with Minister Frances Fitzgerald to inform her that tourists are “baffled and disappointed” to discover that licensed outlets are closed on Good Friday.
They added that the situation would be exacerbated by the upcoming Leinster v Bath rugby feature and next year’s Easter Rising celebrations.
“They made the point that prospective visitors will be making their travel plans in the coming weeks and that a decision to allow licensed trading would be a huge boon to the tourist sector and the economy as a whole,” said a statement released today.
