The proposal is part of a housing and rent package before the cabinet today.
New measures aiming to protect tenants are being proposed this week in a bid to tackle the housing and rental market.
If the proposals go through, landlords could face hefty fines of up to €3,000 which would be incurred if they inform tenants that they plan to sell the property and it later emerges that they didn’t do so.
According to reports, the new proposals could see the introduction of a new rule whereby property owners may have to sign a legal declaration if they are planning on selling up, or pay the fine if it is revealed that they did not sell.
Currently, landlords are able to evict tenants if the property is being put up for sale, or if the home is need to house their own family.
This is just one of a number of new proposals being put forward on housing and rent and the news has been welcomed by many due to the further protection it offers tenants.
