Little Merthe from the small Dutch town of Haren expected a few close friends to attend her 16th birthday this weekend but when she left her Facebook invitation public, she let herself in for a whole pile of trouble.
The virtual invitation soon went viral with hundreds of thousands of guests happily RSVP-ing.
Spoof videos and t-shirts embossed with ‘Project X Haren’ were being produced as the invitation was seen my more and more people. Crazy after parties were announced as the guests planned their trip to Haren and tried to emulate the Hollywood party film Project X.

Although the teenager notified the police about the out of control party that was soon to hit her small town, the authorities were not prepared for the thousands of boozed up people who arrived only to smash Haren’s windows, loot shops, light fires, and throw bottles and smoke bombs.
Police were forced to shut down Haren’s roads and ban the sale of alcohol, but this did not stop the mayhem and six youths were hurt, two very seriously. Police made 34 arrests in the usually sleepy Dutch town.
The town’s mayor Rob Bats Harley slammed the gatecrashers who brought mayhem onto the townspeople who watched as police battled drunks on their lawns.

“Scum ran amok in our town and set out to be as bad as this,” he said.
Merthe and her family were forced to spend her 16th birthday in hiding because they were too upset to return to their home last night.
We’ll be making all of our Facebook invitations private from now on, that’s for sure! Poor Merthe. We hope she can reschedule her party for another day but this time we think she should just give her mates a text.
