Maori people in New Zealand have criticised a Playboy playmate for posting a nude photograph of herself atop a sacred mountain.
Jaylene Cook posted this snap on Instagram after making it to the top of Mount Taranaki at Egmont National Park on the country’s North Island.
“This climb has forever changed me. I proved just how far I could push myself and I am truely proud of my accomplishment,” she wrote in the caption.
But post has angered a local Maori tribe, according to the BBC.
They believe that the peak is a burial place for their ancestors and is itself an ancestor of the Maori people.
“It’s like someone went into St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and took a nude photo,” said Dennis Ngawhare, a spokesperson for the Maori tribe.
“It’s a sacred place and something like this is just very inappropriate.”
“It’s only recently that we can have some input on what goes on at the mountain,” the local Maori spokesman explains.
“We simply ask people to please be respectful. This latest case is just another really annoying example where someone obviously didn’t know how to behave here.”
The BBC reports that Jaylene has defended herself, saying she had researched before the trip and thought taking the picture was not offensive.
