PICTURE: The Saddest Thing About the Irish Heatwave

We repeat: NOT closing down...

Rebecca McKnight

Let’s just accept it now, for the next twenty years and more, we’re all going to be talking about the summer of 2013.

For the most part, we’ve thrown ourselves into the heatwave with gusto, but every now and then something crops up to remind us that we’re really not prepared for these conditions at all.

Paddling pools and fans are sold out across the country (long before stocks of suncream dwindled, mind), and those of us who didn’t plan on a sun holiday this year are ravaging the bargain bins at Penneys trying to find a bikini that fits for a day at the beach.

This picture is one of the best heatwave snaps we’ve seen so far though. Gareth O’Connor of Today FM news took to Twitter to ask for the best heatwave stories, and one response came from Ciarán McMahon. Ciarán shared this snap, taken in a Meath shop earlier this week.

Just think of all the wasted chocolate…

UPDATE: Feedback suggests that chocolate from the fridge is your only man on days like these, but it seems far too few shopkeepers are taking note. Even if you’re short on space that’s no excuse… as Eve Noone pointed out with this pic, snapped en route to Cork last week. Well played.
