Picking Up Some Fruit For Lunch? You Might Need To Bring Some ID

It’s one thing being asked for ID when you fancy a bottle of wine after work but this is a bit much.

A woman in the UK popped into her local Tesco to buy a £1 tub of melon and grapes but faced a surprise when the self-service tin flashed up ‘requiring ID’.

According to the 27-year-old, Miss Lancaster then emailed Tesco and was told a new policy meant “fruit will be age verified in case natural fermentation takes place” and the supermarket could only sell a packet of fruit to someone over 18, “amid fears it could get their customers drunk”.

“When I got the response from Tesco, I told my friend at work and we fell about laughing – it’s just incredulous. You couldn’t make it up.”

However, a Tesco spokesperson has since spoken out to confirm that there are no plans to restrict fruit sales.

“I’m really sorry that you received this email and please let me assure you that we will not be asking for ID for fruit in our stores. Our customer service colleague’s comment about natural fermentation was meant as a joke – we’re sorry if it was taken literally. Of course we have no plans to age restrict fruit sales.

“Our team have apologised for any confusion and are sending Mrs Lancaster a fruit basket as a gesture of goodwill.”
