A set of urinals in a Parisian hostel has sparked outrage online, after students accused the owners of objectifying women with their interior design.
Belushi’s hostel has come under fire after images of toilets and urinals in the shape of a woman’s mouth were spotted in the men’s toilets.
The unusual interior design sparked controversy amongst young women using the hostel, with users posting complaints to the hostel’s Facebook page:
“Hi, just wondering if there’s a reason your urinals are shaped like a woman’s mouth, or if it’s just because your establishment is fully committed to make women feel unwelcome and unsafe, right down to your interior design choices? Do you think it’s a good idea to be give your (drunk) male customers this impression of women in general, and specifically of your (young, often travelling alone and vulnerable) women guests? Just some questions I have for you!”
Rather than taking the complaints seriously though, the hostel staff instead insisted that the design was actually mimicking the iconic Rolling Stones album cover.
Adding further insult to the enraged customers’ posts, a staff member posted:
“Just for future reference, the ladies’ room is further down the hall.”
The comments received mixed responses from the public, while one man weighed in on the side of the original complainant writing:
When contacted by Marie Claire, the manufacturer of the toilets said the urinals made no reference to Rolling Stones in any of their marketing material, and were promoted as ‘Kisses’ toilets when sold to the hostel.
