Una Kavanagh

This year was yet again a solid year for the phone app industry and we saw some exciting releases make their way onto the iPhone and Android store.

From sorting out your bills and task management, to entertaining games, there was a huge selection of applications to sort through to find our favourites – but we got there. Some of these are previous releases with updates, but trust us when we say, they’re worth it!

Here are our top apps that we think you should check out:

1. SwiftKey 4 Keyboard – Android

This handy app makes typing that bit more speedy and concise. The features include a solid predictive text that learns as you type, which we thought was very cool.

Check it out here.

2. Find My iPhone/Find My Phone – iPhone, Android

Find My iPhone/Find My Phone allows users to track their missing device from their computer and find its exact location. Particularly handy if you left it in a taxi, lost it in the house somewhere or if it was stolen.

Sleep as Android is a nifty app that takes a look at your own sleep patterns through a very clever alarm clock that tracks your sleep cycle. You can look back at your own sleep graph and calculate when best to set your alarm for a less restless night.

Check it out on the Android store here.

5. What Salon – iPhone, Android

This Irish-made app is such a simple concept but a fantastic idea. The app allows users to book last minute appointments in salons, beauty parlors and hairdressers across the country and you can book on the go!

6. Fantastical 2 – iPhone

This award-winning app is aiming  to conquer all calendar apps out there and it’s certainly one of the top ones we’ve seen! It’s been recently redesigned for iOS 7. Simple and slick, this app is worth checking out.

7. Life in the Womb

The Science Picture Company launched a new pregnancy app this year which enables expectant parents to follow their baby’s journey from conception to birth. The fascinating app explores the week-by-week progress of the baby using 3D generated imagery. This cool app even captures and illustrates these moments and milestones through the 40 weeks of pregnancy.
