A recent report by the UN has stated that one in eight men in rural Bangladesh have admitted to committing gang rape.

It is a crime that is punishable by death though there are no government figures on cases. The social stigma and failure to accurately investigate rape are attributed to the low level of rape cases reported.

VICE News reporter Tania Rashid has travelled to Sylhet to meet and interview the perpetrators and victims of gang rapes. She meets with local police to discover what facilitates the continuation of these crimes.

An excerpt below from the 20-minute documentary shows Rashid speaking with covered men who speak frankly about gang raping a girl of 22 or 23 years of age.

The issue was brought into the lime light earlier this year when a 22-year-old girl was gang raped by five men on a minibus Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital.

Police say the woman was waiting at a bus stop for a ride home after work on Thursday night when a minibus stopped in front of her and two men forced her aboard. They and three other men inside the bus took turns raping her for an hour and a half while the bus slowly drove around the Jamuna Future Park area in northeast Dhaka.

Women’s rights groups say a culture of impunity and indifference from authorities encourages such crimes to continue.
