#Pantigate: The Power Of Social Media And How A Story Can Go Global In Just 3 Minutes

In the latest tribute to #Pantigate, the news aggregation and analysis platform NewsWhip have taken a look at how social media changed and shaped the news story of Rory O’ Neill a.k.a. Panti Bliss.

Back in January, following an RTÉ controversy with the Iona institute, Panti gave this inspiring Abbey Theatre speech calling out homophobia and oppression in society.

The speech, which went viral, has since been translated into various languages and the Irish drag queen has received support from Stephen Fry, Graham Norton and Alan Cummings.

In this video which is just under three minutes long, NewsWhip show the power of social media and how quickly a story can go global.

The YouTube video description reads: “Yesterday the Broadcasting Bill Amendment went to a Dáil vote, and was defeated 44 to 76. However, regardless of the outcome this is a story that has been fuelled from the outset by social media.”
