OKCupid are calling all users to switch from using the Firefox browser, with customers accessing the site via the browser urged to switch over to a new server.
Appearing on-screen when signing in through Firefox, OKCupid posted:
“Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich, is an opponent of equal rights for gay couples. We would therefore prefer that our users not use Mozilla software to access OkCupid.”
The decision to boycott Firefox came when OKCupid discovered Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich had shown his support of California’s Proposition 8 (the now obselete ban on same-sex marriage), highlighted by a $1000 donation made in 2008.
OkCupid’s message to Firefox users continued saying:
“Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure.”
Firefox shot back at the claims, posting their own repsonse saying:
“Mozilla supports equality for all, including marriage equality for LGBT couples. No matter who you are or who you love, everyone deserves the same rights and to be treated equally. OKCupid never reached out to us to let us know of their intentions, nor to confirm facts.”
Despite the response by Firefox, OKCupid is firm in their stance, arguing that 8 percent of their users’ relationships would be illegal if Eich’s anti-gay-marriage views were made into law.
