A firefighter turned his attention to another type of emergency today, when he delivered a baby boy to a woman whose car was stuck in traffic due to a fire close-by.

Ross McLaren delivered the healthy baby boy to a stranded woman in labour using tips he’d picked up watching popular Channel 4 series One Born Every Minute.

The woman’s car was caught in gridlock due to the fire which Ross had been on stand-by to manage. McLaren had been on-site at the nearby blaze when he was called to help at the scene.

Speaking to media, the firefighter recalled turning up at the car to deal with the situation:

“I ran round to where the baby was and kept telling the lady to push. Once he was born we rubbed him down to get his circulation going and when he started crying I knew it was going to be all right.

“Someone said to me the other day that as firefighters we usually enter people’s lives at their worst moments so being there at such a joyful occasion makes a nice change.”

London Fire Brigade took to Twitter to congratulate their comrade on his newest set of skills, tweeting:

The mother and the baby boy were taken to North Middlesex Hospital where they are believed to be healthy.

Now that’s one to tell him when he’s older.
