We all see those lists every year with the top five baby names in Ireland and it’s rare to see the top three change that much.
However, there are a number of other names that come in and out of fashion as quickly as we eat a bar of chocolate and thanks to the Irish Times Data, we now know the names that may not be cool for school.
Some of the most popular newcomers to the list in the last ten years include Noah, which rocketed from 80th place in 2004 to the top ten in 2014. Similarly, there were just three little boys called Mason in 2004 while by 2014, there were 201.
Other new entries in recent years include Jayden and Logan while old favourites such as the name Shane have dropped from being in the top 20 to now not even registering in the top 50.
Some of the other favourites in Ireland including Padraig and Peter are not even in the top 100, while for girls, the names Megan and Rebecca have both dropped out of the top 60.
Sticking with the girls and other names such as Shauna, Eimear and Shannon have all lost popularity and don’t register in the top 100 anymore, while the name Amelia has rocketed up the charts and landing 5th place by 2013.
Other popular new entries include Ruby, Sienna and Poppy while in 2013, just 79 girls were called Mary compared to 3,721 babies born in the 1960s who had the name.
