New measures to be taken to prevent speeding through the Port Tunnel

It will reduce collision rates by 50%.

This is a great idea.

New measures are being taken to try and tackle the speed of drivers within Dublin’s Port Tunnel. From Autumn, new “time over distance” speed cameras will come into effect which will monitor the time it takes vehicles to travel through the tunnel.

According to The Irish Times, vehicles will be photographed when they enter and exit the tunnel. The length of time between the two photos will be calculated and it will determine if they broke the 80km/h speed limit.

If they are found to have gone over the limit then they will be fined and will also receive penalty points.

Michael Nolan, chief executive of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, has said they hope these new measures will reduce collision rates by 50%.

Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid from the Garda National Traffic Bureau has said, “Due to an increase in traffic travelling through Dublin Port Tunnel, this new enforcement system provides additional support toward maintaining a safe travel experience for all users of the tunnel.”
