A Spanish woman is being held in police custody after she secretly gave birth on Christmas Eve and threw the newborn child out of an upstairs window.
The baby boy somehow survived the fall, but was suffering from hypothermia when he was found. He was not breathing and his heart had stopped beating when medics arrived.
The 35-year-old woman was arrested in eastern Madrid, where she lived with her parents. She had kept the pregnancy a secret, and delivered the baby by herself in the early hours of the morning on December 24th.
After she cut the umbilical cord, she wrapped the baby in a pair of jeans and threw him out the window.
Shortly afterwards, she began to bleed heavily and was taken to hospital by her parents.
According to police, it was later that morning when the newborn’s grandmother
went into the kitchen and, looking out of the window, saw a baby in the patio.
She ran out to pick it up and alerted emergency services. The child was rushed to hospital in a condition described only as ‘serious’.
