Mother denied parole after putting her child in the oven

This is absolutely horrific.

A mother from Alabama who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for putting her 14-month old daughter in a boiling oven has been denied parole.

Melissa Wright was charged with the attempted murder of her daughter, Ashley Smith in 2003. At first the mum denied the charges and claimed that the horrific incident was a mistake.

She told the police that her baby’ ‘fell in the oven and the door slammed shut’. However after further investigation she admitted to putting her child in a 600 degree oven and claimed that ‘voices told her to do it.’

This week, Ashley Smith, who survived the incident with terrible third degree burns over 30% of her body, pleaded with authorities to keep her mother locked away.

Ashley came in front of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, and asked them to refuse Melissa’s plea for early release.

Ashley

Ashley is now 14- years- old and was raised by her aunt and uncle, whom she refers to as her mum and dad.

She told the parole board how she has forgiven Melissa for what she had done but she would not trust her.

“’I honestly do not trust her and I’m afraid for their safety. I can’t imagine anybody being in as much pain as I was in. And now I have a great life thanks to my mom, stepdad and brothers and sisters. I do not hate Melissa, but I do not love her. I forgave Melissa”

Melissa was arrested back in 2003 after Ashley’s father heard a baby cry and came into the kitchen to find his child in the oven.

According to WFSA, Melissa, “removed the racks out of the oven, turned it to a broil and waited for it to heat up, and then put her, head first into the oven.”
