Imagine being married for 20 years and not actually knowing about it. It sounds weird, but that’s exactly what happened to comedienne Janeane Garofalo.
Apparently poor Janeane had no idea that she had been married for a whopping two decades, until her hubby decided that he wanted to take a trip down the aisle with another woman.
The New York Post reports that Janeane married her then-boyfriend Rob Cohen “as a joke” back in 1991 but didn’t realise that her nuptials were real.
“We got married drunk in Vegas… We dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought] you have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew?” said Janeane.
Janeane said she was completely unaware that her old boyfriend was her husband until he contacted her and told her what had happened. She added that the two of them “had to have a notary” dissolve the marriage half an hour before they made an appearance at the reunion of The Ben Stiller Show.
“We were married for 20 years until this evening,” said Janeane, speaking at the reunion.
“We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something,” she added.
Janeane had no idea that her “joke” vows were actually real and legally binding…
Despite the fact that Wikipedia has been describing Janeane and Rob Cohen as ‘married’ for the past few years, the couple both assumed it was a case of internet-editing gone wrong.
“I’m gonna get all of that “Reality Bites” money!” joked Mr Cohen when the couple announced their divorce.
Mr Cohen was making a reference to Janeane’s role in the 1994 blockbuster that also starred Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder.
Eh… how would you react if you randomly found out you had a husband?
