Michigan man Dan Maurer has raised enough money to have an operation to have his swollen, 100-pound scrotum removed.
The 39-year old told the New York Daily News how his scrotum started ballooning in his late 20s, and continued increasing in size despite constant exercise and diets.
Despite being told by several doctors to lose weight as a treatment, Maurer realised he was suffering from scrotal lymphedema after he watched a documentary about Wesley Warren Jr – a man with a 132-pound scrotum who died after several heart attacks.
After meeting with Warren’s Californian doctor, Maurer was discouraged when he realised he couldn’t afford the care, even with his wife Mindy’s insurance.
Spekaing to the New York Daily News, Maurer said:
“I just put it off on the back-burner, thinking ‘this is never gonna happen.”
With the help of a local parishioner, Maurer started a fundraising page for his surgery, which has now raised more than $28,000 for his surgery.
Maurer has told media he hopes by highlighting his cause to support others who suffer from the condition. He also hopes the surgery will enable him to have a physical relationship with his wife for the first time in seven years.
