Scorching Malaga is the top resort destination visited by Irish people this summer as thousands flock to its sunny beaches and crazy clubs.

According to a study carried out by Visa Europe, nearly 30,000 flights departed Ireland for the Costa del Sol already this year.

Despite the surge in flights to Spain, Britain remains our most popular holiday destination and more Irish flights fly into Heathrow than anywhere else in the world.

London Gatwick, Stanstead, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh are other airports favoured by Irish passengers who are visiting the UK.

The number of Irish passengers travelling to the UK includes many people who travel on business and also thousands of soccer fans who flock to stadiums throughout the country.

The Olympic Games are also said to have had an impact on the amount of Irish people jetting into the UK this summer.

Faro, Paris and Alicante are also destinations favoured by the Irish.

Visa Europe’s Conor Langford said: “The popularity of the Six Nations, Premier League and European rugby fixtures has seen demand surge for UK destinations.

“The poor weather this summer has also meant sun destinations like Malaga, Faro and Alicante remain popular with Irish holiday makers.”

Mr Langford also said Irish people have no problem putting their holiday expenses onto a credit card while abroad.

“Travelling Irish fans are also happy to spend abroad as our data shows they are comfortable using their debit and credit cards,” he said.
