When it comes to getting hitched, are you a superstitious person? While getting married in 2013 would be considered unlucky to some of us, a whopping 87 per cent of Irish people think it’s a good idea to tie the knot next year.

A survey of 400 brides and grooms showed that most Irish couples are hoping to turn superstition on its head and believe that getting married during 2013 will actually bring them good luck.

The survey, which was conducted by the West Cork hotel in Skibbereen, also revealed that while husbands-and-wives-to-be are happy to get married during a year that has ‘bad luck’ connotations, the vast majority of them still believe in traditional wedding day superstitions.

84 per cent of the couples questioned said that they believe it is bad luck to see your future spouse on the day of the wedding, while 62 per cent said they wouldn’t leave the house without something old, new, borrowed or blue on their big day.

Are you superstitious when it comes to getting married?

July and September were declared the most popular months for getting married and January and May were ranked as the least popular.

The survey also revealed that 42 per cent of those questioned said they had spent (or would spend no more than) €10,000 on their big day. 17 per cent had a little more cash to flash and admitted they would spend upwards of €25,000 to ensure their wedding was perfect.
