If you’re single and currently out in the world getting your mingle on with other singletons, you might want to up your text message game. Why? Well, according to a new survey, annoying texting techniques after a date are a major passion killer.

Yes, 3 in 10 single people openly admitted that they’d dump a potential boyfriend/girlfriend if they didn’t feel a certain amount of ‘textual’ chemistry with them. It sounds harsh, but honestly ladies, how many times has this happened to you?

You know how it goes. You go out with a guy, you have a great time, you laugh, you joke, you think ‘I like him’ but then a few days later you are so bored to tears by his texts that your initial attraction starts to wane. We’re not sure about the term ‘textual chemistry’ but we do think banter has to translate well over texts/emails/phone calls if a potential relationship has any hope of getting off the ground.

According to the survey, which was commissioned by dating website Match.com, the biggest turn off for people is bad spelling in texts, closely followed by abbreviations like ‘gr8’ and ‘LOL.’

Double texting (the art of sending another message before the person has the chance to reply to the first one) also ranked highly and using smiley faces was cited as being childish and bad ‘textiquette.’

Would you dump someone if they were a bad texter?

The survey of 2,200 single adults also revealed that the vast majority spend an average of 14 and a half minutes reading and re-reading their messages to make sure they’re perfect before they send them.

Men are 60 per cent more likely to get a friend to read their post-date texts before they send them and apparently 16 per cent of women firmly believe that sending the first text after a date is the man’s responsibility.

“Not only do you now need to perform well on the date itself, if your follow up message is not up to scratch, then you might be out of contention for a second meeting,” said Kate Taylor, a dating expert for Match.com.

“Written communication is more important than ever,” she added.

Okay women, be honest – how long have you spent agonising over a text before you sent it?
