“You never forget your first time” – it’s an old saying that is definitely true. Whether it’s a good experience or a bad one, you never forget your first kiss, your first love, your first… ahem… well, you know what we’re talking about.
But did you ever wonder why we never forget that special person? A new study from the United States seems to have an answer.
According to the Gone But Not Forgotten study the reason why we remember losing our virginity so well is because our first sexual experience actually defines the type of sex we’ll have for years to come.
Scary, right? Especially if you didn’t exactly see fireworks during your first time.
Anyway, this study is one of the first to look at whether or not the circumstances in which someone loses their virginity have lasting consequences on the rest of their sex life. And so far, the results have been pretty interesting.
Good or bad, you never forget your first time
The researchers asked 331 young men and women about how they lost their virginity. They were also asked how they felt during and after the experience. The volunteers then had to fill in an online diary that detailed their sexual antics for the next fortnight. They were also asked to rate their sexual relationships.
More than two-thirds of the volunteers said they were in a relationship when they lost their virginity. Analysis of their answers showed that the people who were most emotionally satisfied the first time they had sex, had the most fulfilling sex lives now. Oh and the people who were physically satisfied with their first time, were also having fulfilling sex now.
The study discovered that a better first time, meant a better sex life later on.
“These results suggest that one’s first-time sexual experience is more than just a milestone in development. Rather, it appears to have implications for their sexual well-being years later,” said Carrie Smith, a research from the University of Mississippi, where the study took place.
“The happier the experience initially, on the whole, the happier in future. It just kind of sets you up for good experiences,” said Dr Pam Spurr, a sex expert.
