Lend A Hand – Four Great Irish Causes To Get Behind This Week

These charities need your help.

Sue Murphy

Every week in the Her.ie offices we are inundated with requests from people asking us to help them promote their charity events. While every cause is worthwhile, unfortunately we can’t get around to all of them and so for that reason, we have decided to put together some of these events from around the country. Every week, we will feature five events you should get behind or get involved with over the next few months. There are tonnes of amazing organisations in this country, let’s help them out.

1. Barretstown Dublin Marathon.

Taking part in the Dublin Marathon is an amazing personal challenge, and it’s even better if you’re part of Team Barretstown. The event takes place on Monday 27 October and online entry is now open.

Children who come to Barretstown have often spent a long time in hospital and have been denied ordinary childhood experiences such as making friends and developing social skills. At Barretstown they are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone in a fun, safe, activity based environment. Find out more about how children and families benefit from Barretstown here.

You can enter the Dublin Marathon online at http://dublinmarathon.ie/enter/ or contact Cliodhna at [email protected] or 045 864115 for your fundraising pack and more.

2. ‘Prom to the Paddock’- Race Week Luncheon at the Salthill Hotel

The Salthill Hotel is hosting a style and dine luncheon on Monday, 28th July to kick-start the Galway Races Summer Festival, all in aid of Enable Ireland.

The glamorous afternoon begins at 1pm with a prosecco reception, followed by a racing style  fashion workshop where the most exclusive looks and must have pieces from Brown Thomas Galway will be presented by stylist Orla Sheridan.  Get expert advice on how to achieve the perfect look for a day at the race course. Guests will enjoy a 4 course lunch where racing pundits Tracy Piggott and Tom Lee will share their tips for a winner!

Glamour meets goodwill as all monies raised from the event will go towards the wonderful work of Enable Ireland, which provides free support services to children with physical disabilities and developmental difficulties in Galway city and county.

Tickets costing €65 including; a drinks reception, 4 course lunch, transport and entry to the race course are available directly from the Salthill Hotel by calling (091) 522711.

3. Raise funds for Console.

Console was established in 2002 by Paul Kelly after he had experienced the grief of losing a loved one by Suicide. Through his loss, Paul recognised a need for a dedicated Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention Service here in Ireland.

Since then Console has developed into a National Organisation supporting people in Suicidal Crisis and those Bereaved by Suicide through Professional Counselling, Support and Helpline Services.

You can run any kind of charity event to raise funds for this charity and they really need your help. You can find out more info over on Console.ie.

4. Foodcloud.

An Irish start-up foodcloud has announced a huge partnership deal that will see all surplus foods from Tesco’s 146 stores redistributed to charities and community groups through the use of the group’s app.

The foodcloud app will allow Tesco to upload details of their surplus food every day at a particular time and specify a time for collection. From here a text message is then sent out to all the foodcloud partner charities in the community to notify them of the offer. When a charity accepts the donation, they collect it from the relevant Tesco store within the time period specified.

For any charities or community groups who would like to be included in the text messaging service, register with foodcloud on their website at www.foodcloud.ie
