Lend A Hand – Five Great Causes To Get Behind This Week

These charities need your help!

Sue Murphy

Every week in the Her.ie offices we are inundated with requests from people asking us to help them promote their charity events. While every cause is worthwhile, unfortunately we can’t get around to all of them and so for that reason, we have decided to put together some of these events from around the country. Every week, we will feature five events you should get behind or get involved with over the next few months. There are tonnes of amazing organisations in this country, let’s help them out.

1. DSPCA Presents Summer Petfest

DSPCA Summer Pet Fest will take place on Saturday 7th June from 12 noon – 4pm at the DSPCA Campus, Mount Venus Road, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16.

Fun for all the family with Dog Training display, face painting, bouncy castles, food stalls, ice cream, bric-a-brac, book stall, games and “The Fairy Dell” with fairy trees!  Bring your dog and the kids for a fun filled afternoon.  Come and see the DSPCA and the animals in its care while supporting a worthy cause.

Entrance free, Carparking €3.  For more details visit www.dspca.ie

2. Red Ribbon Project, Free Rapid HIV Tests on Thursday June 12th

The Red Ribbon Project has been involved in HIV activism since it was first set up in 1989 by a group of gay men in Limerick and is currently promoting ‘Everyone has an HIV status – do you know yours?’ by providing rapid HIV testing in the community. Sunday June 15th is Irish AIDS Day and the Red Ribbon Project, based on Davis Street in Limerick City, will mark the day by holding free Rapid HIV Tests on Thursday June 12th.

Anyone interested in booking an appointment for a Free Rapid HIV Test should contact Red Ribbon Project on (061) 314 354 or email [email protected].  All appointments are confidential. Appointments can be made for other dates & times but a charge will occur.

More information about RRP can be found online at www.redribbonproject.com.

3. Stars in Their Eyes Meets X Factor at Clane GAA Club.

“Daniel O’Reilly Allen is a 4 Year Old Fighter! who was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy at birth, and is currently waiting for his new heart. As his treatment is not available in Ireland, the HSE has approved him to travel to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London to have it done, the translplant is funded by the HSE but all other expenses including travel and cost of living in England for potentially months and the cost of keeping your home and family running here are not. Sinead and Danny have travelled with Daniel on numerous occasions to London (sometimes very last minute) in the last four years and have spent 100’s of days in Crumlin hospital with Daniel. They realise the cost of living in London and keeping their home and 12 year old son in Ireland will be an impossible task without your help.”

‘Daniel’s New Heart Appeal’ has been set up to support Daniel and his family through his treatment. If you know anyone who would like to donate to this fundraiser, please call 0831667696 or [email protected].

4. The Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk

The Pink Ribbon Walk is a national voluntary movement with a big dream – a world without breast cancer. All the money you raise goes to Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. They support families all over the country who are battling breast cancer. The next walk will be in Killaloe on Sunday 8th June. The walk will again be through the beautiful twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina, spanning the counties of Clare and Tipperary.

Register online on www.pinkribbonwalk.ie – registration is €20.

5. Homeless Street Leagues.

Irish Street league uses the power of sport to transform the lives of individuals from underprivileged, poorly educated, socially excluded and conflicting communities. Street leagues are not about fixing people’s problems. It is part of the solution. It is about boosting self-esteem, self-confidence and self discipline, empowering people so as to enable individuals to take responsibility for their own futures with confidence.

On June 7th, the Charity Box Ballsbridge Inn will host a White Collar charity event The Right Fight with some very familiar faces. You can find more info here.

If you have a charity event you would like us to help with, please send us an email to [email protected] or to [email protected].
