Every week in the Her.ie offices we are inundated with requests from people asking us to help them promote their charity events. While every cause is worthwhile, unfortunately we can’t get around to all of them and so for that reason, we have decided to put together some of these events from around the country. Every week, we will feature five events you should get behind or get involved with over the next few months. There are tonnes of amazing organisations in this country, let’s help them out.
1. Childline
One of the most important charities in the country has seen a 20% drop in their donations recently and they desperately need your help. Childline is a part of the ISPCC and try to empower, support, and protect young people. Their services are all free and confidential. The charity are worried that they may miss calls from children suffering abuse, bullying or just simply needing someone to talk to.
If you would like to help out the charity, you can donate here.
2. Geraldine Lavelle Trust
“Geraldine is a young woman from Castlebar, Co.Mayo. As a result of a serious cycling accident last October, Geraldine suffered a spinal fracture that left her paralysed from her chest down. Having spent several weeks in the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where she underwent major surgeries on her neck and spine, Geraldine is currently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital undergoing intensive rehabilitation.
Refusing to accept her medical prognosis, she stated her number one goal is to walk again one day. In order to achieve this objective, Geraldine and her family are looking into innovative treatments and procedures internationally, which could further enhance her mobility and recovery.
In the meantime, Geraldine is keen to return to the life she had prior to her accident. This will require massive effort on her part in terms of intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy, specialised equipment and communications technology, as well as enormous physical, moral and financial support from family and friends.”

4. Doing It 4 Dad, Raising Awareness For The Irish Heart Foundation
Ann-Marie’s Dad died at the beginning of this year aged just 52. Along with her sisters, she is trying to raise awareness of sudden heart attacks in Ireland.
Ann-Maire commented: “He never once was in the hospital and was never sick. He had a massive heart attack and passed away after 3 days of being in ICU. Myself and my 2 sisters who are all under 30 have now lost our Dad. Nothing we can do now can bring our Dad back we have to live our lives without him and that is going to be heart breaking. He died far to young. In a year, I will take part in various running events along with races to a total 52k in memory of my dad and to raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. Please help me with this journey and challenge.”

5. The DSPCA
The DSPCA is Ireland’s oldest and largest animal welfare charity and was founded in 1840. The DSPCA takes in sick, injured and cruelly treated animals of every species from pets like dogs, cats, snakes, rabbits, parrots, ferrets and horses. They also deal with wild animals such as deer, foxes, swans and ducks. Every year the DSPCA rescue 1000’s of animals from injury and neglect and prosecute cases of cruelty where ever possible. Animals are rehomed as pets and released back into the wild if wildlife.
However, the DSPCA need your help to keep doing their good work. You can donate, re-home an animal or foster animals from the shelter. You can find more details here.
Good luck to all of the women taking part in the mini-marathon for various causes on Monday! We’ll be running for the amazing Marie Keating foundation here in Her.ie offices.
