Leftover Swap: The App That Encourages People to Share Their Food and Reduce Waste

The innovative app aims to combat food waste.

In the age of sharing, one man has taken it to another level – he’s encouraging people to literally share their food.

Say hello to Leftover Swap, an innovative app developed by entrepreneur Dan Newman.

The idea for the app came about when Dan and a few friends ordered too much pizza and couldn’t fit portions into their fridge.

“We were like, ‘We don’t want to throw this out, and it would just be great to broadcast that we have extra pizza to share,'” he recalls.

And so, Leftover Swap was born. The free app allows people to trade or give away their excess grub by uploading them to the database. Diners can then choose to arrange a delivery or a pick-up.

“If you have a little community in your neighborhood and you don’t want to eat the same lasagna for a week, why not trade that with another family?” Newman told the Daily News.

“A lot of people are disgusted at first because they don’t see the whole realm of possibilities,” he said.

“Once they realize they can grab a perfectly good box of mac and cheese from someone clearing out their cupboard, and how fun it will be to snap a picture of the half of a pizza they haven’t eaten, they’ll come around.”

Pizza anyone? More info on this interesting app can be found here.
