Left or Right? 10% of Couples Frequently Row Over Which Side of The Bed They Sleep On

When it comes to having a snooze, are you a lefty or a righty? And, more importantly, is your partner pleased with your preference?

We’ve already looked at what your sleeping position says about your relationship and it seems as though ‘sleeping pattern analysis’ is the latest thing in the hotel industry. In fact, a chain of hotels has actually invested money in investigating how couples decide on those sleeping positions. Apparently a LOT of fighting is involved (we’re not surprised).

According to some new research, commissioned by the Premier Inn hotel company, over 10 per cent of couples frequently argue about which side of the bed to sleep on. The research also revealed that one in 20 men are usually unhappy with the outcome of these arguments (again, not surprising).

Researchers surveyed over 2,000 adults about their sleeping habits and preferences, and discovered that when it comes to getting comfy in bed, most men will give in to their partner’s demands.

Some common reasons for preferring one side of the bed over the other were a better view of the telly, being closer to children, being near a radio, being further away from outside noise and being closer to a large amount of floor space.

What side of the mattress is “your” side?

“Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to their sleeping styles but which side of the bed people sleep on seems to be fundamental to getting a good night’s sleep,” said Claire Haigh, a spokeswoman for Premier Inn Hotels.

The adults surveyed showed an even split between preferring the left or the right side of the bed, but regardless of which side they chose, most adults had a clear preference.

Nearly half of the adults questioned admitted that they couldn’t sleep properly if they weren’t on their preferred side of the mattress.

Do you have a clear preference or would you happily sleep anywhere?
