Our bodies need a balance. A lack of balance in our bodies can show through in many ways like weight gain, nutritional deficiencies, fertility issies, fatigue, stress, blood sugar conditions…the list goes on.

It is difficult to maintain this balance with food additives and a highly-charged modern daily life but certain superfoods can help our bodies find that balance and give us energy.

A US nutrition doctor, Jessica Sepel, has compiled a list of 10 superfoods, guaranteed to provide energy and balance and very easy to store and add to foods we eat everyday.

1. Goji Berries

These small berries contain essential fatty acids and B vitamins and will make a visible difference in your energy and stress release. Also good for boosting your immune system. Add one tablespoon to smoothies or yogurt.

2. Chia Seeds

Also high in omega-3 fatty acids, these little seeds are great antioxidants. You can sprinkle them on oats or cereals in the morning or add to smoothies during the day.

3. Cacao Powder

This powder contains a mild stimulant that can enhance fat burning, and tastes delicious. It can also increase pleasure and relaxation by boosting a feel good brain chemical. Add one tablespoon to warm porridge, it’s like eating chocolate cake! Or, alternatively, make a hot chocolate drink with boiling water or milk.

4. Stevia

I had never heard of it either, but it’s a great alternative to artificial sweeteners. It contains no calories and will not affect blood sugars but can help control your sweet-tooth cravings and weight. Sweeten tea, yogurt or breakfasts with it.

Stevia is said to control sweet-tooth cravings…

5. Kale

These are powerful antioxidants that can help fight infection, Sepel calls them the ‘King of Greens’. Chop the vegetable into a salad.

6. Oat Bran

Oat bran is a cholesterol-lowering agent and is also a fabulous source of fibre. Boil some in water or milk and add nuts, berries, cinnamon and sprinkle with stevia for a delicious breakfast or snack.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

This vinegar promotes digestion and cleansing in our bodies. It is also a great digestive tract cleanser. Add one tablespoon to warm water every morning or use as a salad dressing.

8. Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is meant to be great for balancing our hormones, including PMS and irregular periods. It is very high in protein. Add one teaspoon to your smoothie or juice.

9. Cinnamon

We like the mention of this…the healthy spice is meant to stabilise blood sugar levels which can help control sweet cravings and sudeen hunger. You can sprinkle it on anything; smoothies, yogurts, grilled vegetables…

10. Coconut Water

We think this one could come in handy…Coconut water is packed with electrolytes so it naturally hydrates and it can be a great hangover cure. It can also enhance weight loss by keeping the metabolism level of the body at an optimal level. Great to drink on its own.
