It’s been dubbed the ‘Da Pinchi Code’.
Homeowners have been warned to look out for chalk marks outside their houses, as they may indicate that your home is a target for burglars.
A report in today’s Irish Examiner states that the chalk markings have appeared in Dublin, Drogheda and Limerick in recent months.
A post on the website for National Security, a security and business consultancy, first alerted homeowners to the practice last month, providing a keycode to the various symbols known to be in use.
It appears that the marks are the work of reconnaissance team, where scouts will work estates offering to do odd jobs, or begging, and all the while taking note of potential targets.
The symbols are understood to be regularly used by criminal gangs in the UK, and some of the known markings indicate anything from ‘easily conned’ to ‘vulnerable female’.
