We’re all in the midst of a horsemeat freak out on this side of the Big Pond, but it seems our American counterparts are taking inspiration from our equine scandal… and adding it to the menu themselves.
The States are more than likely safe from accidentally ingesting horse in the guise of beef, but top US restaurants are channelling our fear into some delicious, top-notch dishes.
One Philadelphia restaurant thinks people would love to sample a bit of equine fare and is aiming to add horse to their menu, on purpose. Imagine that.
News channel CBS Philadelphia says the chefs chowed down on horse in Italy, where it’s considered cool to eat the stuff so long as it’s not disguised as anything else, so they want their customers to have the same experience Stateside.
One chef told CBS he’s got ideas going already for what he wants to offer.
“I plan to try to introduce it in smaller portions, like in an appetizer and/or pasta dish,” he says.
“I think it will be a little more acceptable to have a small piece of it as opposed to a great T-bone of horse meat.”
And his solution if people turn their nose up at the stuff is simple. He’ll just take it off the menu.
Maybe the horsemeat scandal wasn’t the worst thing ever when it comes to our diets?
Dublin are already lapping up the adventurous food, as chef Pat Hyland, who has been selling horse meat burgers and baguettes at Dublin’s Meeting House Square in Temple Bar for the last four years, has said he has noticed a huge increase in sales in the last three weeks.
Who knows… in years to come we could be settling down to a Sunday horsemeat stew without a second thought… (fully aware that it is horsemeat we are munching on of course).
