Talk about a rough ride…

A 22-year-old Irish cyclist was left with a permanent erection for seven weeks, following an accident where he “fell astride the crossbar” of his bike.

A Dublin hospital has since successfully treated the man, who suffered in silence for five weeks before attending a Dublin hospital for treatment.

Details of the rare case are included in the latest issue of the Irish Medical Journal.

The man, who is described as a “competitive cyclist”, is not named in the piece. According to cycling news website Stickybottle.com, he sustained a blow to his perineum – the undercarriage area between the scrotum and anus – when he fell onto the crossbar of his mountain bike.

While the swelling and bruising eased within a number of days, the cyclist was left with a case of priapism, or a permanent erection, resulting from an abnormally high flow of blood into the area which failed to subside.

Five weeks after the accident, the unfortunate gent attended the Meath and Adelaide Hospital in Tallaght, and underwent two weeks of treatment which involved interrupting the blood flow for long periods.

Some weeks after the successful treatment, the Irish Medical Journal report that the man is now enjoying a “satisfactory erection and intercourse”. Good to know.
